PRACTICE: Meditation & Memorization
Meditation and memorization might feel like the broccoli of spiritual practices—good for you, but not exactly the first thing you crave.
But what if we told you that you already meditate every single day? Yep. You are already a meditating master.
If you’ve ever spent a day (or several) wracked by anxiety, guilt, or frustration, you know what it feels like to have your thoughts oriented in one direction. The experience may not have been uplifting or peaceful, but you were meditating. You were just meditating on your own circumstances.
Unpleasant? Probably. But there’s a better way.
Joshua 1:8 reads, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
When we meditate on our own circumstances, schedules, or fears, it’s easy to wander off course on our journey toward wholeness. When we meditate on the Word of God, we’re walking arm-in-arm with Him toward joy and freedom.
Meditation and memorization are not about earning gold stars in heaven. They are an invitation to intimacy with Jesus. They steady our minds, strengthen our spirits, and fill us with truth when we’re tired, tempted, or afraid.
When the psalmist said, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps. 119:11), he wasn’t talking about a religious chore. He was describing the secret to a resilient, joy-filled, God-saturated life.
Eugene Peterson described these practices as “chewing” the Word—savoring, breaking it down, digesting it until it nourishes us, becomes part of us, and leads to our becoming more like Jesus.
And Jesus is in the process with us. He’s not standing off on the sidelines with a checklist, angrily tallying every time our thoughts wander. He doesn’t expect immediate mastery or perfection. He’s got His sleeves rolled up, and He’s in it for the long haul. And he’s ready with an overabundance of grace and patience as we practice meditation, day by day and year after year.
